What cookies are

Cookies are small files a website stores on your device. They let a site remember things — that you have seen a message, which page you came from, or how you got here.

The ones we have to use

A small number of cookies are necessary for the website to work: they keep the site secure, remember your cookie choices, and make forms behave properly. These cannot be switched off, and they do not identify you personally.

Measurement cookies

We use Google Analytics to count visits and see which pages people find useful, so we can write better ones. It tells us things like which guides are read, which pages people leave from, and roughly where in the country visitors are. It does not tell us who you are.

These cookies are only set if you agree to them when you first arrive, and you can change your mind at any time. If you do not agree, no analytics code is loaded at all — not loaded and blocked, simply never fetched.

Google Analytics is run by Google, so this information is processed on Google’s servers, which are outside the United Kingdom. Your IP address is used only to work out roughly which region you are in, and is not stored. This applies only to the anonymous website statistics described here — the personal and financial information you give us as a client is held in our own systems and is not sent to Google. Our privacy notice explains how that is handled.

We do not use advertising cookies and we do not allow anyone to track you across other websites from here.

Changing your mind

You can withdraw or change your choice by clearing cookies in your browser. Every major browser lets you block or delete cookies; doing so may stop parts of the site working as intended.
